10th May, Kigwema Celebrates First Priestly Ordination in Village History

In a historic and joyous celebration, the Catholic community of Kigwema witnessed the ordination of its first priest, Rev. Fr. David Sale, OFM Cap, at a solemn Eucharistic celebration held at his native village. The ceremony marked a red letter day for the Mary Help of Christians Parish, Jakhama, the Capuchin Order, and the Diocese of Kohima.
The ordination Mass was presided over by Most. Rev. Dr. James Thoppil, the Bishop of Kohima, who, in his homily, reflected on the sacredness of the priestly vocation. Drawing from the readings selected by Fr. David, the Bishop emphasized that priesthood is not merely a career but a divine call to serve, to be a mediator between God and His people, and to be salt and light in the world. He encouraged the new priest to be rooted in prayer and devotion, especially to Mary, Mother of Priests, and to radiate Christ’s love through his ministry.
The Bishop also expressed deep gratitude to Fr. David’s family for offering their son to the Church, reminding them and the wider community of their ongoing role in supporting him through prayer and encouragement.
Adding to the significance of the occasion, Rev. Fr. Robin Victor D’Souza, Provincial of the Capuchins, was present and delivered his greetings, congratulating Fr. David and the Kigwema community for this blessing. He lauded the journey of formation that culminated in this ordination and acknowledged all those who had contributed to Fr. David’s spiritual and academic formation.
The event brought together clergy, religious, village and community leaders, relatives, friends, and well-wishers, all rejoicing in this moment of grace and hope. The ordination of Fr. David Sale stands as a proof to God’s faithfulness and the growing spiritual maturity of the community of St. Michael Catholic Church, Kigwema.
