12th-19th May, Renewal Course for Catechists and Lay Leaders Held at Newman Pastoral Centre

A week-long Renewal Course on Faith Formation for Catechists and Lay Leaders was held from 12th to 19th May 2025 at the Newman Pastoral Centre, Chümoukedima. The programme brought together 55 participants from 19 parishes and centres across the regions of Dimapur, Jakhama, Peren, Phek, and Kohima I & II.
The course aimed to deepen the participants’ knowledge of Church History, the Sacraments, and the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC). Each day began with Holy Hour and the Eucharist, followed by intensive sessions conducted by renowned resource persons including Bishop Emeritus Jose Mukala, Fr. Dr. Graviour Augustine, Fr. Dr. Jacob Charalel, Fr. Kokto Kurian, Fr. Dr. Joe Mariadhas, and others. Topics ranged from liturgy, sacraments, canon law, and catechesis to family issues and pastoral challenges.
Evening sessions featured group activities, Bible skits, sharing sessions, and movie screenings, fostering fellowship and joyful learning.
On Sunday, 18th May, Bishop James Thoppil visited the participants and delivered an inspiring address. Quoting Pope Francis, he reminded them, “You are the Bible,” urging catechists to live their faith as daily witnesses. He emphasized the Church’s identity as One, Holy, Catholic, and Apostolic, and presented each participant with a copy of Youcat and Docat.
The course concluded with a cultural evening on the final day, featuring performances by participants and a prayer dance by MSMHC aspirants. Bishop Emeritus Jose Mukala, along with several priests and sisters, graced the concluding celebration.
Participants expressed deep appreciation for the spiritually enriching experience and requested more such opportunities for formation in the future.
