Catechetical Certification Program by Deacon Sherman Kuek OFS

The Catechetical Certification Program, a diploma course initiated by the Diocese of Kohima, was conducted at the Newman Pastoral Center, Chümoukedima, in two phases under the guidance of Professor Deacon Dr. Sherman Kuek OFS from Malaysia. This course was designed to equip Catechists, lay leaders, and formees with deeper theological and pastoral knowledge. In addition to the in-person sessions, the same course was also made available online for those unable to attend physically.

The first batch (2023-2024) successfully completed their course, and certificates were awarded to 46 participants in recognition of their dedication and achievement.

The new batch for 2025 phase – I commenced on 9th January and concluded on 14th January 2025. The inaugural session began with a brief introduction by Sr. Rita Kera MSMHC, followed by a hymn to the Holy Spirit, beautifully sung by SABS novices. The Director of Newman Pastoral Center, Fr. Sabu Chenackal, invoked God’s blessings and formally introduced the resource person, Deacon Sherman Kuek, along with his brother Sylvester and son Chestan. As a token of respect and warm welcome, they were presented with traditional Naga mufflers.

Throughout the program, all participants actively engaged in the sessions, gaining valuable insights from Deacon Sherman Kuek’s teachings. The certification course concluded with a short entertainment program as a gesture of appreciation for the esteemed resource person. The event ended on a joyful note with a tea gathering, fostering fellowship and gratitude among the participants. This Catechetical Certification Program continues to be a significant initiative in the Diocese of Kohima, strengthening faith formation and leadership within the Church.
